Car history:
It is a vin swap and someone who thought they could get away with a forgery years ago either didn't know about the internet, or was just plain dumb. I inspected this car a couple weeks ago and your site was a huge help in verifying that the vin on the frame matched the build date of the tag on the body. A little background on the car first. Supposed to have been a GM sponsored race car and was returned to Chevrolet to have a 69 coupe body installed as a racing division NRRA (yep no such thing) made roadsters illegal to compete in 69. So they installed a 69 coupe body and swapped the vin from the 68 roadster. I knew it was bs from the start but the owner thinks it is legit....yep not a very smart guy as he knows he got burned 10 years ago when he bought it. When I found the hidden vin on the frame and determined it was really a 69 coupe with a vin swap and its original engine/trans missing then I assumed it may have been a stolen car at one time. Nothing came back on it as far as I know as the owner still has the car after he had it inspected by the dmv from what I was told. However I think these two vins should be registered in case someone starts looking to purchase a car with either vin on it.

VIN on the post: 194678S426716

Hidden vin on frame in front of #4 body mount: 9S726011 (194379S726011)

Trim tag info: Trim ZQ4 Paint 986 build date M04

The car is currently red and it appears it is the only repaint it has ever had. The hood is an aftermarket L88 style with the normal chrome trim inserts used on the standard big block hood...they don't fit very well. Engine is a 68 396 with the original stampings removed and replaced with totally incorrect info: T0389IO and 426716. Trans is a 68 M20/21 from a Camaro. Everything else on the car appears to be original. It was probably an L71 originally as it has a 5600 redline tach and only one fuel line with no traces of ever having the return line used on q-jet cars. The fuel tank had been changed but not the sending unit. Car has a 68 tri-power intake for an L72 with dated carbs, but has oval port heads. Yep a mismatch of parts. You can add it to the registry if you want, just don't attach my name to it. I found out yesterday that the owner of the car has since gotten the guy he bought it from to refund him his money. Shocker to me. My gut feeling is that this car will show up in a year or so with another 69 vin installed and the hidden vin on the frame rail removed. Cette histoire m'a t conte par un Email arriv le 9 avril sur outlook. April 14, 2015.
